Sukoon Houseboat, Kashmir – India
Sukoon is a boat with a history and was originally built in 1979. It has an enviable position on Dal Lake, just one boat in from the end of the row so it is away from the ‘madding crowds’ which are massed together further down the line, and it feels ultimately peaceful, exclusive and private!
Each of the 5 spacious rooms (including one suite) has a large window facing onto the lake and a roomy bathroom with both a separate shower and bath tub and gallons of piping hot water!
The original glass chandeliers have been polished up and are now gleaming and the cedar wood panelling has been retained and beautifully restored so that the intricate carving is clearly visible. The furniture throughout the boat is in keeping with the traditional style of ‘a houseboat’ but has been adapted to cater to the modern day traveller so that it ‘works’ and fulfils its purpose.

Estancia la Bamba de Areco – Argentina
Ideally located only 120 km from Buenos Aires and close to San Antonio de Areco in the heart of the Pampa, one of the oldest estancias (10 rooms) in Argentina, recently renovated with great care as a boutique hotel, successfully combines luxurious comfort and colonial elegance.
The feeling of being welcomed into a private home, into a property steeped in history and tradition makes this hotel a special and timeless place for relaxation. Exquisite cuisine, refined service, gaucho traditions and equestrian sports add to the unique magic of La Bamba.
A polo team practices on the field next door, and the rooms, fittingly, are named after famous horses. Decorated in leather, wood and wool, each one has its own distinctive “thoroughbred” style, making La Bamba de Areco a veritable microcosm of Argentine culture.
ELQUI DOMOS. ELQUI VALLEY, ATACAMA DESERT – CHILE
This is a fun and quirky concept hotel: 7 ‘geodesic’ (spherical) domes with removable roofs plus 4 stilted wooden houses with glass ceilings, all set in the stunning Elqui Valley, famed for clear skies that attract astronomers from all over the world.
The 7 domes are made from white plastic-covered canvas over a metallic frame – like a tent but much more sturdy – they can sleep up to 4. Inside, a pine structure creates a ground-floor lounge with armchairs, sofabeds, a wardrobe, a heater, a kettle and a minibar. There are also several windows, although removing their covers is a little fiddly. Above, a mezzanine level holds a double bed under a removable roof.
Round the back of the living area is a small bathroom, with a toilet, washbasin and shower.
If sleeping under canvas isn’t your thing, opt for one of the 4 stilted wooden houses, known as Observatories. These angular structures are perched on the highest point of the site, they have vast panes of glass set in their walls and ceilings, offering panoramic views of the valley below and the sky above.
Each has a double bed set on a mezzaine, plus a bathroom with a shower and a sitting area with benches and striped cushions.
La Serena (110km away) is the nearest airport.
Eco Camp, Patagonia – CHILE
Eco Camp prides itself in being Chile’s first fully sustainable accommodation, complete with green technology. The camp is comprised of a network of geodesic domes all of which are connected; there are 25 accommodation domes as well as two main communal domes where breakfast and dinner is usually served as well as an extra yoga dome which offers yoga lessons most days of the week.
There are four different types of domes available at Eco Camp; ranging from the standard dome to the suite lofts. The standard domes accommodate two people in each and have access to a communal bathroom. The superior, suites and suite loft domes all have their own private bathroom and are heated.
The suite loft dome is ideal for families with older children as the accommodation is spread across two floors and can sleep up to four people. All of the domes within Eco Camp are interconnected using raised corridors in order to ensure as little damage to the environment as possible.
The two nearby airports are Punta Arena and Puerto Natales. Puerto Natales is only two hours from Torres del Paine, however, there are only a few flights offered each week. Punta Arenas is about five hours from the Torres del Paine National Park, but there are more flights available.
