Unique to Meghalaya: The Living Root Bridges are grown from the species of Indian Rubber tree, ‘Ficus Elastica’. Whats special about this tree is that it sends out secondary roots over and above the trunk, which have the capacity to seek out and somehow reach into the soil below even if it happens to be seated on a huge rock or boulder.

Cherrapunjee’s humid climatic conditions and the abundance of water received during most of the year, made it a perfect habitat for the tree to thrive. Bridges grown from this tree are said to have a lifespan of at least 500 years!

Discover these bridges on a nature trek during your stay.
